Community Naloxone Program:

Since May 2025, Northern Bristol County Public Health Alliance participates as an affiliate to the state-funded Community Naloxone Program. Per the Naloxone Community Standing Order in Massachusetts, first responders, health and human service workers, and other community members are authorized to dispense naloxone to individuals and families for their personal use.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, in 2023 there were 2,125 confirmed opioid-related overdose deaths. Since 2022, the Community Naloxone Program (CNP) allows eligible organizations to obtain free naloxone (Narcan) 4 mg nasal spray through the State Office of Pharmacy (SOPS). The goal of the CNP is to reduce opioid-related overdoses and prevent death through increased distribution to community members across Massachusetts.

NarcanⓇ is an opioid antagonist that can reverse the effects of a potentially fatal overdose by binding to opioid receptors and restore normal breathing. The drug has no major side effects and can be administered by members of the public with limited training. NarcanⓇ is not dangerous if administered to a person who is not overdosing from an opioid, and it has no potential for abuse.

If you suspect someone is having an overdose, you can help save a life. Best practice is to call 911 & Administer naloxone nasal spray. You can repeat after 3 minutes. If possible, perform rescue breathing and chest compressions (push hard and fast) until advanced emergency medical help arrives. Place the person in a recovery position.

How to Store Naloxone:
  • Store at room temperature.
  • Protect it from light, heat and moisture.
  • Check its expiration date regularly.
  • If your Narcan does freeze, it can still be used after thawing at room temperature for 15 minutes (don’t wait to call 911!)
